Last week, current and former New England Patriots players engaged in a round of pickleball alongside members of the Massachusetts National Guard.
This activity was part of the NFL’s ongoing Salute to Service month, which recognizes and honors veterans, active-duty service personnel, and their families.
Getting A Huge Kick Out Of The Occasion
The event, held at the Kingsbury Club in Medfield, saw the participation of 60 service members.
Reflecting on the experience, some of the attendees talked about the huge kick they were getting in mingling with football stars. Tech Sgt. Hannah Misiuk remarked, “I’ve been a very big fan for all of my life, and my greatest memories are watching Patriots games with my brothers, so I definitely am enjoying this!”
Deep Significance
For the participants, especially veterans, the event held deep significance in witnessing their community being honored.
One attendee noted, “I’ve met a lot of veterans where they get out, and things were not going good for them. So, the fact that they recognized us, it shows that they care. And I feel like that’s what’s needed.”
Patriots players echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of showing appreciation to those who risk their lives. Linebacker Jahlani Tavai shared, “It’s pretty awesome. “It’s cool to get away from football and show some love to the people who are risking everything for us. So it’s great to see some smiles out here.”
The event preceded the upcoming 2023 Army-Navy Game at Gillette Stadium, marking the first time in its 124-year history that the game will be played in New England.
Last Year’s Event
Notably, this wasn’t the first time the Patriots collaborated with the Massachusetts National Guard for a pickleball tournament; a similar event took place last year during the Salute to Service initiative.
Reflecting on the day, defensive back Myles Bryant emphasized the significance of honoring the service members: “All the rights we have as Americans, these people fight for that. That means a lot to me, and I want to show my gratitude to them for that.”
Bryant was one of several players who also participated this year, along with teammates Jahlani Tavai and Cole Strange.
Other players taking part last year were Matt Sokol, Scotty Washington, and Calvin Munson.
“Proud To Be A Part Of This”
Ex-Patriots representatives, such as players Rick Cash and Jonas Gray, also showed up. One of the most popular attendees was now retired offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. Scarnecchia is an avid pickleball player and showed everyone how it was done.
Scarnecchia talked about his passion for the sport: “I took it up probably a few years ago. It’s a lot of fun. I was a former Marine, so I’m proud to be part of this.”
Overall, the event provided an opportunity for both players and service members to bond, highlighting the importance of honoring those who serve the country.
