If you’re like me, you love the thrill of the game. But with all that fast-paced action, it’s crucial to protect your eyes. Did you know pickleball can expose players to various eye injuries?

And get this—the total cost of all pickleball injuries, including eye injuries, racked up an estimated $250 to $300 million in health insurance costs in 2023 alone, according to UBS. Clearly, it’s time we do something about it!

Here’s how to keep your peepers safe while enjoying the game we all love.

Why Eye Protection is Important

A recent study published in the journal Eye revealed some startling statistics: pickleball, along with other racquet sports, poses a significant risk of eye injuries. The combination of fast-moving balls, which can reach speeds of up to 40 mph, and close-quarters play makes accidents all too common. The study highlighted injuries like corneal abrasions, retinal tears, and even hyphema (bleeding in the front chamber of the eye).

For older players, especially those over 65 who make up a large part of the pickleball community, the risk is even higher. They may not have the speed or agility to avoid a fast-moving ball, increasing their chances of injury. Plus, anyone with pre-existing eye conditions, like dry eye disease or a history of eye surgery, is more vulnerable.

I saw Ben Johns hit Collin Johns in the eye and laid out Collin for 20 minutes. Ever since then I’ve seen Collin wearing glasses. Smart brother.

I wear glasses all the time since I camp out at the net. Major firefights.

It’s not just numbers and statistics, though. Even celebrities aren’t immune to pickleball’s hazards—just ask Michelle Pfeiffer, who ended up with a black eye from a pickleball mishap!

Simple Solution: Wear Protective Eyewear

The great news is that you can prevent 90% of eye injuries simply by wearing protective eyewear.

The best way to protect your eyes is to wear shatterproof, impact-rated eyewear. Polycarbonate safety goggles are the gold standard, offering front and side coverage.

The Ideal Eyewear Features

When selecting your protective eyewear, look for these key features:

  • Polycarbonate Lenses: These are lightweight, shatterproof, and provide excellent protection.
  • Wrap-Around Design: Ensures maximum coverage and protection from all angles.
  • Anti-Fog Coating: Prevents your lenses from fogging up during intense matches.
  • Comfortable Fit: Adjustable nose pads and arms ensure a snug fit, even when you’re sweating.

So which pickleball eyeglasses are the best?

Why Regular Glasses Aren’t Enough

You might think that your everyday eyeglasses or those trendy drugstore sunglasses are enough to protect your eyes, but that’s a big misconception.

First off, regular glasses are not designed to withstand the impact of a pickleball traveling at high speeds. If they’re not impact-rated, they could shatter on impact. Not only would you risk getting hit by the ball, but you’d also have to deal with broken glass near your eyes—definitely not a good situation.

Drugstore sunglasses might look stylish and offer some UV protection, but they lack the durability needed for sports. They can easily break or fall off your face during a game, leaving your eyes vulnerable.

So, ditch the regular glasses and get yourself a pair of impact-rated sports glasses. Your eyes will thank you.

4 Key Tips for Eye Safety

  • Stay Alert: Always keep your eye on the ball and be aware of your surroundings. Anticipating where the ball is going can help you avoid unexpected hits.
  • Positioning: Stand at a slight angle with your non-dominant side facing the net. This position helps protect your face and eyes from direct hits.
  • Use a Hat with a Brim: A hat can provide an extra layer of protection by shielding your eyes from unexpected balls.
  • Communicate with Your Partner: Good communication with your playing partner can prevent collisions and unexpected shots. A quick shout of “Mine!” or “Yours!” can go a long way in keeping everyone safe.

So next time you hit the court, make sure you’re equipped with the best eye protection.

Happy playing, and stay safe out there!
