The Veolia Houston Open Presented by Just Courts promises to be an exhilarating display of pickleball prowess as players gear up for the latest PPA showdown.

The tournament is the second of four to be played over consecutive weekends, and here’s a sneak peek at the event’s highlights, potential matchups, and players to watch out for.

Leading The Pack

Leading the pack is none other than Ben Johns, fresh off his triumphant triple crown victory in NC. The burning question on everyone’s mind is: Can Johns replicate his stellar performance and clinch back-to-back wins?

Meanwhile, Teenage Centurion Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau have opted to bide their time, strategically sitting out the PPA schedule until the Atlanta leg. This tactical move adds an air of mystery to their future appearances, leaving fans eagerly awaiting their return and wondering who will step forward in their absence.

Dekel Bar looks like a player to watch. He will spearhead his personal charge alongside partners Thomas Wilson and Tina Pisnik.

Thrilling Spectacle

Houston serves as the backdrop for this thrilling spectacle, marking the PPA’s much-anticipated debut in the city. In terms of logistics, the Veolia Houston Open will be the seventh event of the year and one of 15 Opens scheduled for 2024. This tournament will be a crucial battleground for the major contenders, with a total of 1,000 points on offer for the victors.

The format follows tradition, with singles matches kicking off today, Thursday, followed by mixed doubles on Friday, women’s and men’s doubles taking center stage on Saturday, and the grand finals on Sunday. Pro qualifiers and amateur doubles competitions were held yesterday.

On the broadcasting front, fans can catch all the action live on Prime Video, PickleballTV, and Tennis Channel, with coverage starting at noon Eastern Time from Thursday through Sunday.

Women’s Singles

Turning our attention to the players, Mary Brascia claims the coveted number-one seed in the women’s singles category. However, can Lea Jansen seize the opportunity to claim gold after her spirited display against Anna Leigh Waters in NC?

Kaitlyn Christian (7) had a commendable showing in Austin, clinching the silver medal. Could this be the tournament where she makes her final breakthrough and secures a coveted spot at the top of the leaderboard?

Another player to watch is Parris Todd (6), whose impressive performances continue to turn heads. Her rating is expected to rise steadily as she continues her upward journey.

Men’s Singles

In the men’s singles division, all eyes are on Ben Johns as he vies for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title. However, emerging talents like Cason Campbell and Martinez Vich pose a formidable challenge.

Meanwhile, many eyes are on Federico Staksrud (2), whose remarkable consistency has been the talk of the pickleball world. With an impressive streak of six consecutive singles finals under his belt, Staksrud is a force to be reckoned with on the court.

Martinez Vich (6) and Joseph (9) ‘s potential matchup in the round of 16 has all the makings of a classic encounter.

Mixed Doubles

Mixed doubles teams are gearing up for a shot at redemption, with top seeds Bright/Ignatowich aiming to bounce back from a disappointing performance in Cary, NC.

Megan Dizon and Roscoe Bellamy (16) bring plenty of firepower that could propel them to a breakthrough performance. Their combined strength and skill mean they have a great chance to shake up the competition and make their mark.

Meanwhile, Maggie Brascia and Julian Arnold (13) team up. Brascia arrives in Houston hot on the heels of a strong showing in NC, where she reached the semifinals in mixed doubles alongside Todd Fought.

Another pairing to watch out for is the reunion of former Seattle Pioneer partners and MLP Champions Etta Wright and Ben Johns (2). With their shared history and undeniable chemistry, Wright and Johns are primed to make a significant impact.

Women’s Doubles

In the women’s doubles, Rachel Rohrabacher and Anna Bright (1) have to cope with an unexpected upset in NC, but they still carry the number one seed into the Veolia Houston Open. Despite the setback, their determination and skill make them a formidable duo to watch out for.

Lacy Schneemann, a finalist in NC, joins forces with fellow Californian Jessie Irvine (5), and their combined talents and shared determination make them a formidable challenge for anyone.

Another noteworthy pairing is Callie Smith and Lucy Kovalova (2), who reunited after competing separately in recent tournaments.

Watch Vivienne David and Jackie Kawamoto (4) closely. Their exceptional blend of offence and defence makes them a force to be reckoned with on the court. With their strategic gameplay and unwavering determination, they have the potential to challenge for the title.

Men’s Doubles

In the men’s doubles division, all eyes are on sixth seeds Connor Garnett and recent father, DJ Young. This dynamic duo has the talent and motivation to dazzle audiences and make a deep run in the competition.

Adding to the intrigue is the fourth-seeded team of Yates Johnson and Dylan Frazier. Their unique blend of strengths and strategies brings an element of excitement and unpredictability to the bracket.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded pair of Wright and Ignatowich has yet to reach a final despite their undeniable talent. Will this be the tournament where they finally break through and secure their spot in the finals?

One team to note is the formidable pairing of Dekel Bar and Thomas Wilson, who hail from the Austin area. With their shared roots and relentless determination, they are on a mission to claim gold in Houston and leave their mark on the doubles circuit.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
