Kathy Demetri, affectionately known as “Crazy Kathy” within the pickleball community, is an enthusiastic superfan renowned for her larger-than-life support at major pickleball events, cheering on professional players and amateur friends alike.
At the 2023 Biofreeze USA Pickleball National Championships in Texas, Demetri participated in the amateur draw, standing out as one of the tournament’s notable figures alongside the professional players.
Amiable Demenor
“I enjoy following both the pros and the amateurs,” she shared with Stephen Hunt of Red Line Editorial for USA Pickleball. “Where else do you get to witness both together? It’s incredibly rare.”
Her amiable demeanor often attracts fellow enthusiasts who greet her, share kind words, or seek a photo – gestures she readily reciprocates.
Transitioning from tennis to pickleball in 2015, initially in Pittsburgh and later relocating to Hilton Head, South Carolina, Demetri found joy in the social aspect, ease of learning, affordability, and camaraderie within pickleball.
The Unique Social Culture
She highlighted the unique social culture of the sport, emphasizing the post-match camaraderie rarely found in other sports.
“I love a couple things (about pickleball) — it’s social, easy to learn, inexpensive to play, and the camaraderie. In tennis, we can’t banter on the court like in pickleball. I do some teaching of pickleball. Where (else) can I teach someone to play a sport in an hour?
“A lot of people don’t play competitions. They play socially, play a little bit, get some exercise, and then go out for dinner or whatever after.
“To be able to play against an opponent and then walk off the court and have a drink and converse is unheard of in some other sports. I don’t know where that comes from, but that’s the culture pickleball has. It’s very open, very social.”
USA Pickleball Ambassador
Aside from her active involvement in tournaments and avid support for pickleball, Demetri serves as a USA Pickleball ambassador, a Level 2 referee, and a certified instructor recognized by the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR).
However, beyond her interest in the pickleball world, there’s a side to Demetri that might surprise many fellow players – the extensive career she’s had in the nuclear industry spanning nearly four decades.
“I’ve been in the nuclear industry for 39 years,” she revealed. “Primarily involved in designing nuclear plants for commercial electricity generation and overseeing safety system development for potential accidents.”
“I managed a project in Europe for 20 years where we developed a reactor design for the European Community.
“Then, we started building units in China and did a tech transfer, so since 2017 been working with the Chinese on how to learn (about) and build reactors in China.”

Twenty-Eight Tournaments!
Despite her whacky persona during matches, Demetri’s professional life often stuns people when they learn of her work in the nuclear industry. Yet, she finds solace in her “Crazy Kathy” persona, explaining it as her way to unwind and embrace a different side of herself.
Last year, she participated in 28 tournaments. However, her on-court activities in 2023 were curtailed due to an injury sustained during a rather unexpected incident.
“I was at Kent State for my daughter’s college orientation. We were riding scooters, and I shattered my wrist,” Demetri said.
“I have a plate and 13 screws (in my wrist). That took me out from June through August, but I’m back playing again.
Quirky Trademarks
Her quirky trademarks, like enthusiastically squeezing a rubber chicken and displaying professional players’ heads on sticks during matches, have become well-known. These gestures, initially inspired by a desire to cheer on players like Tyson McGuffin at events, have become part of her signature support style.
“The heads started in 2015 with Tyson McGuffin,” Demetri explained. “I asked if we could cheer him on, so I took five heads to the U.S. Open.”
