The City of Greenwood has announced plans to construct a large-scale pickleball facility at Freedom Park. According to a news release, the $1.3 million building will be the largest pickleball complex in Johnson County.
Complex To Host Sanctioned National Tournaments
The city plans to construct a new pickleball complex just north of the Freedom Spring Aquatic Park. This facility will be equipped to host sanctioned national pickleball tournaments. This development follows the recent opening of a 65,000-square-foot sports facility by the city of Greenwood.
According to Greenwood Mayor Mark W. Myers, these two new buildings are expected to boost tourism in the city and county.
Mayor Myers stated, “Over the course of the next year, we are expanding our outdoor facility offerings with this complex and the Greenwood Sports Park coming to fruition.”
He also emphasized the importance of serving local players but also providing for others from Indiana and the Midwest:
“Both facilities are a direct response to the increased demand from residents. As these projects come online, our priority is serving our residents, but we also look forward to welcoming visitors from around Indiana and the Midwest right to our backyard.”
“Greenwood Has Embraced Pickleball”
The official announcement from the Greenwood Parks and Recreation Department revealed an additional 120 parking spots will be constructed at Freedom Park to accommodate the influx of visitors.
Director of Greenwood Parks and Recreation, Rob Taggart, talked about Greenwood and its connection with pickleball: “Greenwood has embraced pickleball from its inception with our first courts being established in 2017.
“Now, more than ever, the sport is attracting players of all ages, and we are excited to increase access by adding additional outdoor courts.”
The city officials of Greenwood indicated that the “tentative” opening date for the complex is set for late spring 2024. Further details about the project can be found at greenwood.in.gov.
