Want to elevate your pickleball game and boost your win rate? It’s time to embrace the concept of high-percentage pickleball.

While hitting an impressive winning shot is satisfying, focusing on consistent, reliable plays is the key to long-term success, especially for players transitioning from beginner (2.0-3.0) to intermediate levels (3.5-4.0).

What is High-Percentage Pickleball?

High-percentage pickleball involves making shot selections that have a high likelihood of success and minimize the chances of making unforced errors.

By prioritizing these shots, you increase your chances of winning points and matches.

4 Key High-Percentage Shots

  1. Shots Down the Middle: Hitting down the middle reduces angles and forces your opponents to make more difficult returns.
  2. Deep Crosscourt Shots: These shots maintain the ball’s angle and keep your opponents on the defensive.
  3. Volleys Near the No-Volley Zone: Keeping volleys within 12 inches of the NVZ allows you to control the pace and reduces error likelihood.
  4. Third Shot Drops: A well-placed third shot drop can regain control of the point and set up a winning shot.

5 Common Low-Percentage Shots to Avoid

  1. Overpowered Shots: Excessive power often leads to balls going out of bounds.
  2. Awkward Positions: Shots taken from poor positions, like off-balance, increase error risk.
  3. Spin-Heavy Shots: High-spin shots require more precision and are riskier.
  4. Shots from the Backcourt: These give opponents too much time to react.
  5. Sharp Angles: Crosscourt shots near the sideline are difficult to execute consistently.

Smart Strategies for High-Percentage Play

  1. Hit More Balls to the Middle: This reduces angles and confusion among opponents.
    • Player Tip: “Middle solves the riddle” is a common saying in pickleball. By aiming for the middle, you create more margin for error and put pressure on opponents.
  2. Target Opponents’ Backhands and Ankles: These are typically weaker spots and force awkward returns.
    • Player Tip: “Aiming for the ankles gives you more room for error and forces tough defensive shots.”
  3. Adopt a ‘One More Ball’ Mentality: Great defenders focus on getting just one more ball over the net, wearing down opponents over time.
    • Player Tip: “Don’t worry about perfection. Just think, ‘one more ball,’ and you’ll see longer rallies and more victories.”
  4. Transition from Defense to Neutral: When faced with a strong offensive shot, aim to neutralize rather than counterattack.
    • Player Tip: “If you’re pulled wide or off-balance, reset the point instead of trying to win it outright.”

Bonus Tip: Watch the Pros

Want to up your pickleball game? Spend some time watching the pros. Players like Ben and Collin Johns are masters of high-percentage play. They focus on steady, strategic shots without taking unnecessary risks. By observing their matches, you can pick up valuable tips on shot selection, positioning, and tactics.

Notice how they aim for consistency and control, making smart decisions to keep the pressure on their opponents. Try incorporating some of their techniques into your game, and you’ll see a real improvement in your performance.

The Role of Experience and Repetition

Wondering how to pros know the right shot to take every time? It’s all about experience and repetition. The more you play, the better you’ll get at understanding which shots work best in different scenarios.

Over time, you’ll naturally develop a sense for what’s high-percentage and what’s not.

Keep on pickling, friends!
