Who doesn’t love recess? It was probably the best word you heard as a kid (maybe second only to ice cream!). Recess brings back those carefree childhood memories, and the brand Recess Pickleball captures that vibe for everyone.
So, when I found out they were sending me one of their paddles, I was excited to see if this design-focused, lifestyle-driven brand had performance to match its looks. I got the Classic paddle in the Barton Springs design, part of their Austin Collection, inspired by the natural springs in Austin, Texas. The paddle had a clean, simple design and a nice color palette.
At first, it didn’t seem particularly special, but I’ve learned not to judge a paddle too quickly. After a few drills and games, I was pleasantly surprised—this paddle delivered solid performance, even if some features weren’t my personal favorites.
Overall, I’d rate it a solid 4.25 balls out of 5 for great play, style, and value.

- Honeycomb Core: 14mm thick for balanced power and precision.

First Impressions
The paddle comes with a sleek, classic canvas zip cover featuring an embroidered logo. As I take it out, it feels solid in hand, with a cushioned, tacky grip (though a bit shorter than I’d prefer). The paddle face is shorter than I prefer, but a bit wider than usual. The face has a grit that’s definitely above average.
After a few air swings, I like the balance and swing speed. Bouncing the ball off the surface gives a nice, solid pop. I can’t wait to test it out on the court!
Game on… the Play testing
Just a few points into my first game, and I could already tell—this paddle required almost no adjustment. Unlike most paddles, I felt right at home. The power and pop off the surface were solid, and I was able to deliver both top spin and slice nearly as well as with paddles featuring T700 carbon fiber.
It reminded me of the Holbrook Mav Pro 2 and my Carbon Pickle, with a similar overall feel.
No Switching Mid-Game
Normally, I only test a new paddle for a couple of games on a first outing before switching back to my usual gear. But with the Recess Classic, I ended up playing five straight games with no intention of switching it out.
Despite the shorter handle and a slightly smaller paddle face, it really had substance. I was enjoying the play and didn’t feel the urge to toss it into the paddle bag.
Taking It Further
On my next outing, I wanted to push this paddle further and focus on specific shots. While I usually add a Lizard Skins wrap to the grip for a second test, I decided to stick with the stock grip for now.
My topspin serve was deep and powerful, and I loved the pop it produced. After a couple of missed slice serves, I nailed the next two with the perfect spin I was aiming for.
Precision in the Kitchen
When it came to dinks and drops near the kitchen, this paddle provided excellent control. I felt like I had great precision in placing shots along the center line and sidelines.
Was it the paddle working wonders, or was I just having a stellar day? Honestly, I’d say a bit of both. What a great day for some Recess play!

As usual, I tried to find something about the paddle I didn’t like, considering its design and target audience—but honestly, I couldn’t, especially at this price point. (Though I’d personally prefer a longer handle and an edgeless design.) Well done Recess co-founders Grace and Maggie!
Is this a paddle for advanced competitive players? No. But for beginners and intermediates looking for a mix of style and performance? Absolutely! It’s perfect for both recreational and tournament play. The vibrant designs—including custom and co-branded options—are fantastic, and it’s clear Maggie and Grace understand their audience based on reviews and social media. Their paddles, apparel, and overall branding (down to their sleek website) really reflect that. Beyond their Classic line, they also offer an Advanced line that I imagine will perform even better based on the specs and materials and other reviews I read. Plus, a big shoutout to Recess for producing most of their paddles right here in the U.S.
I’d call Recess a lifestyle-brand pickleball company with some serious substance. A dialog with Grace was enlightening and confirmed the intention of building a brand that was fitting for a fun and approachable activity which also celebrates creativity through paddle design. Fun fact: she and Maggie actually met on a playground! That is good karma! Let’s go play, kids!
Pickle on my friends, pickle on…
