“Norway Robot Playing Pickleball with Humans” Goes Viral

As you may have seen, a video of a robot playing pickleball with humans recently went viral on social media. The video shows a humanoid robot moving around the court and hitting the ball with surprising accuracy and power.

Curiously-Titled

However, the ingenious viral video has, rather disappointingly, been debunked by several parties, including India Today and Logically UK.

JetLifeTravel came up with the curious title “Norway Robot Playing Pickleball With Humans” when they posted the clip. The ingenious footage features Andrea Koop, Maggie Brascia, and Lea Jansen with a robotic fourth member in the middle of an epic pickleball rally.

What you see now when looking at the post is a notice saying “False Information” and “Reviewed by Independent Fact-Checkers”, and you have to manually click on “See Post” to reveal the clip.

So at what face value appeared to be a stunning breakthrough in the field of robotics, has, after closer investigation, turned out to be just clever CGI.

The original video was from a Major League Pickleball competition held in Daytona Beach, Florida, back in March. The Kitchen Pickleball shared a clip from this match on Instagram, dubbing it the “Most Viral Point in Pickleball History.”

@thekitchenpickleball Anna Leigh Waters and Lea Jansen delivered pure onslaught while blasting balls at Andrea Koop and Maggie Brascia for nearly a full hour. Koop and Brascia handled it all, putting on one of the most impressive performances I’ve ever seen. 💪🏼 #pickleball #pickleballtiktok #pickleballtournament #pickleballpro #pickleballhighlights #amazing #trickshot #highlights #foryou #thekitchen ♬ original sound – thekitchenpickleball

In the false clip, the robot had been digitally inserted in place of pickleball superstar Anna Leigh Waters, which accounts for the dazzling moves and perfect shot execution.

“That’s Some Great Animation Work”

Searches revealed US-based tech reviewer Kim Komando was right on top of the situation, posting the video alongside comments such as “Check out this pickleball-playing robot! What do you think, real or fake?” and “That’s some great animation work.”

The original video is part of a 16-minute YouTube sequence posted in March on the House of Pickle channel. If you skip to the three-minute mark, you’ll see the section the manipulators used for their 20-second clip.

Numerous other videos from the same match were also available on YouTube, offering additional context. A comparison between the original video’s background and the manipulated one can be seen below.

Very Humanoid

There are a few reasons why people might believe that the video is fake.

First, the robot in the video is very humanoid and moves smoothly. This is something that is not yet possible with current robotics technology.

Second, the robot in the video seems to have very good hand-eye coordination, and it is able to hit the ball with surprising accuracy and power. This is also something that robotics technology does not allow.

Challenging To Identify The Source

The video has been reproduced numerous times on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, making it challenging to identify its original source.

Momus Shop conducted an analysis of the clip on a high-definition monitor and reported the shadows of the shoes and feet are clearly different from the robot’s image. Also visible was the blurred background and uneven removal of the original player.

They reached the conclusion someone had used a GenAI program to doctor the original video.

This whole episode had echoes of a similar post in July when the video of a robot playing table tennis went viral. The original video featured a robot which had been generated to replace professional table tennis player Yang Wang.

Some Interesting Questions

Whether or not the video is real, it has raised some interesting questions about the future of pickleball and other sports. If robots were able to compete at a high level against human players, it could lead to a new era of robot-on-human sports competition.

It could also make pickleball more accessible to people with disabilities and lead to the development of new and innovative pickleball training methods.

The video could help to popularize pickleball even further. Pickleball is already a growing sport, but the video could help to introduce it to a new audience.

It could also lead to the development of new pickleball training programs and facilities. For example, robots could be used to create virtual reality pickleball training environments.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
