Explaining “The Race” Ranking System On The PPA Tour

As part of its responsibilities, the PPA Tour maintains detailed information about the rankings of professional pickleball players.

Utmost Accuracy

These rankings are calculated over a 52-week period, factoring in the exclusion of certain tournaments to accommodate variations in player participation.

This method ensures the utmost accuracy in rankings and provides a comprehensive overview of a player’s performance over time.

In contrast, The Race, though similar, operates on a different premise: It tallies points exclusively from the beginning of the year rather than over 52 weeks.

Points are accrued tournament-by-tournament, reflecting the players’ achievements and success throughout the year.

The Race serves as a benchmark for discerning the top-performing athletes in the 2023 season.

The Pinnacle Of The Season

A suitable analogy is to view traditional rankings as a marathon and The Race as a sprint.

Beyond being a compelling statistical metric, The Race also holds a functional significance: At the culmination of the 2023 season, players who secure the highest rankings based on accumulated points earn the privilege to compete in the esteemed PPA Finals.

This event features the most accomplished players in the sport and represents the absolute pinnacle of the game for a PPA player.

Qualification Criteria

The qualification criteria are as follows:

– The top 8 from men’s singles
– The top 8 from women’s singles
– The top 8 from men’s mixed doubles
– The top 8 from women’s mixed doubles
– The top 16 from men’s doubles
– The top 16 from women’s doubles

This results in eight teams for each division. However, the USA Pickleball National Championships notably does not contribute PPA ranking points to The Race totals.

The Culmination Of The Season

At present, the urgency surrounding The Race is palpable as we approach the culmination of the season.

Only two tournaments remain in the calendar year with ranking points at stake: the Guaranteed Rate PPA Championships in Las Vegas and the Hertz Gold Cup scheduled for November.

The PPA Championships, classified as a Major event, awards a substantial 2,000 points to the victors, whereas the Hertz Gold Cup offers winners 1,000 points.

Million-Dollar Question

With this context in mind, the million-dollar question emerges: which players will produce performances exceptional enough in Las Vegas and Daytona to solidify their position among the top 8 and earn the opportunity to vie for glory in the prestigious end-of-year PPA Finals?

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
