Hey there, pickleball fans! Get ready to hear some exciting news about the tennis legend Andre Agassi. You may know him as the player with an impressive eight Grand Slam titles and 101 weeks at number one in the ATP rankings.

However, did you know that he’s now making headlines for his recent win at the Pickleball Slam Competition held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel And Casino in Hollywood, Florida? We previewed the event back in January and the resulting spectacle surpassed all expections.

Wanna’ re-live #thepickleballslam ? Well, we’ve got a mini recap of the legendary event fresh off the presses. We already miss @AndreAgassi @JohnMcEnroe @andyroddick @MichaelChang89 @katiecouric and our friends at @HardRockHolly and @espn pic.twitter.com/HGsPkUwDLp

Along with another tennis icon, Andy Roddick, 40, Agassi faced off against John McEnroe, 64, and Michael Chang, 51, in an intense face-off that captured the attention of sports enthusiasts worldwide. After winning the tournament and taking home a staggering $1 million, Agassi surprised fans with a real statement of affection for pickleball. He expressed his passion for the sport, which shocked many of his supporters who only knew him for his tennis prowess.

Agassi and Roddick won the $1 million doubles prize after defeating McEnroe and Chang 21-15, 21-23, and 12-10. In the singles section, McEnroe beat Agassi 15-13, and 16-14, while Roddick was victorious against Chang 15-10, and 15-10. This meant that Agassi and Roddick won 3-1 overall.

Agassi’s newfound passion for pickleball came to light after criticism from Rennae Stubbs, who claimed that the sport was beneath ATP legends to participate in for petty cash. However, Agassi responded that pickleball required the same effort and skill as tennis.

A reporter wondered if Agassi would like to try pickleball again: Agassi was unequivocal, saying, “100% guys. I never thought I was gonna say this, but I am playing this as long as I can walk. I can’t wait to get back out there.”

Agassi’s wife, 22-time Grand Slam winner Steffi Graf, was cheering him on at the tournament. She delighted the crowd at one point by exchanging seats with the great John McEnroe.

This event wasn’t Agassi’s first pickleball rodeo. In 2018, he participated in the Smashing Walnuts Foundation Charity Pickleball Tournament held in Virginia to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The event was organized in memory of Gabriella Miller, a young girl who passed away from a brain tumor in 2013. The foundation that bears her name raises funds for pediatric cancer research.

Andre was joined at the tournament by other notable athletes, including former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien and former NHL player Peter Bondra. The event raised over $10,000 for the foundation, and Agassi was happy to participate in such a worthy cause.

In addition to the Smashing Walnuts tournament, Agassi has participated in other charity pickleball events over the years. He has also played in exhibition matches to promote the sport, speaking publicly about the benefits of playing pickleball for people of all ages and skill levels.

At the age of 51, Agassi’s passion for sports and competition is still inspiring. Even after all he achieved through his remarkable career – Agassi is one of only eight male players to have won all four grand slams – he is still searching for fresh opportunities and challenges.

His passion for pickleball will hopefully motivate others to give the game a chance and discover what all the excitement is about. So, are you ready to hit the pickleball court yet?

The Pickleball Slam tournament held on April 2nd at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, South Florida was the first to be held at the resort.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
