Overview
At a glance, the Montford’s stats paint a picture of a slim, midweight paddle built for a wide range of play styles. But how does it really feel while out on the court? Let’s dive in!
The People’s Paddle
The thing we enjoyed most about this paddle is its versatility. Clocking in at 7.7 oz, this paddle feels very midweight and also, in a playstyle sense, midrange, making it ideal for players who like to both speed up for firefights at the line and also slow it down to a battle of the dinks!
Everything else about this paddle follows suit; it’s a great intro paddle for any rec player hoping to find an affordable, durable paddle that will last.
Fiberglass Surface
The length and width close in on that baseline average of 16”x8” that we often see, giving the paddle a comfortable feel and a large sweet spot. The Montford’s strong fiberglass surface was designed with power in mind, allowing you to confidently drive your ball deep into your opponent’s side of the court.
The industry seems to be moving increasingly towards carbon fiber surfacing for added spin, but there’s something so classic about ripping drives down the line with fiberglass that just feels so right. Unfortunately, it does come at the cost of reduced spin control, as fiberglass is known for reducing dwell time.
Edgeguard and Grip
Regarding the edgeguard and grip, it doesn’t get much better than this for a paddle that’s around 80 bucks. The sweatproof leather-like condensed foam is incredibly comfortable and allows the paddle to remain firm in hand.
The edge guard is molded perfectly to the surface, and we didn’t notice any weak points even after many days of open play.
All About Aesthetics
The advantage of not being USAP-certified has allowed Single Double some creative freedom with their paddle appearances. Unlike many pro model paddles that feature a gaudy, giant logo slapped in the middle, the Montford is simple in its brightly colored geometric design. You’re sure to make a statement bringing this to your local courts.
Outside of the Montford colorway, Single Double offers a few other designs that feature other colors and patterns. They also offer a service allowing you to create a custom paddle featuring your own design!
Pros
- Excellent midweight paddle for beginner and advanced players
- Leather-like grip and well-made edgeguard ensure durability and comfortability
- Fiberglass surface packs a punch
Cons
- Not USAP-Certified – Can’t use it at sanctioned pro and amateur tournaments
- Lack of carbon fiber surfacing reduces some control
Conclusion And Comparison
The Single Double Montford is a paddle we’d recommend to casual and rec players who are looking for a durable paddle that will also allow you some self-expression while on the court. You can’t deny the appeal of showing up to open play with the most unique-looking paddle on the court.
However, if aesthetics don’t matter all that much to you, a solid comparison would be that of the Joola Essentials paddle. This Joola paddle is very similar in price and specs to the Montford while also being USAP-approved; however, it is definitely lacking in the design department.
So between the two, if you’re going for visual flair, Single Double has got you covered, but if you’re looking to maybe break this paddle out at a sanctioned event, you’d want to go with the Joola. Both paddles are excellent budget options for getting more invested in your game!
