Dink Productions has recently revealed their newest project, In a Pickle: A Comedy. With Balls, the first full-length feature film based on the rapidly growing sport of pickleball in the United States. Co-created by Dan Brooks, a former tennis player turned pickleball enthusiast, and Jason Reid, a prominent builder of tennis and pickleball courts in Florida, the film promises to provide audiences with a one-of-a-kind combination of humor, heart, and sportsmanship.
Dink Productions is an exciting new production company with several compelling films currently in various stages of development. “In a Pickle” is the first project in Brooks and Reid’s joint creative journey.
As the first feature-length movie exclusively focused on pickleball, In a Pickle is a timely and significant milestone. The lighthearted and entertaining film aims to showcase the sport’s joy and camaraderie while highlighting the competition between pickleball and tennis. It will surely be a must-see for pickleball fans and those new to the sport, incorporating elements of comedy, romance, and pickleball puns.
The movie has already generated excitement in the film and pickleball industries. It was written by Dan Brooks, Joel Boyd, and Jason Reid with a completed script and is now in pre-production.
Dan and Jason, both highly accomplished creatives with unique perspectives on the sport’s rise, were inspired to make the movie due to the passionate and diverse community that supports pickleball and the competition between it and tennis. Additionally, Joel Boyd, a well-known comedy writer, actor, and director, was brought on board to infuse the storyline with his relatable humor.
Dan Brooks stated, “I loved pickleball as a game from the moment I first picked up a paddle at one of the game’s iconic sites, the original Chicken Pickle in Kansas City. But I really love the community – in all its wild color and variety –. And one I wanted to show my gratitude for by doing what I do best, creating humorous and relatable content. Plus, the world needs more sports comedies!”
Writer Joel Boyd added, “As a comedian and writer, I’m always observing social questions. So what attracted me to this project, besides the sport’s obvious rising popularity, is that it is about tradition. And it asks the question, ‘when is it time to examine traditions, and do they make sense to stay exactly the same for future generations?’ The story is multi-generational, hilarious, and perfectly in the zeitgeist because it asks these questions in an authentic, fun way.”
The team is working hard to bring this hilarious story to life, and In a Pickle will be filmed in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the movie is set, with production set to begin in the spring of 2024 and the film to be released in theaters that fall.
