Local players at the Onset Village pickleball courts in Massachusetts recently welcomed visitors from faraway Cleveland, Ohio!

Daryl and Rose Sconyers, a husband-and-wife team, paid a visit on Tuesday, October 10, as part of their quest to play pickleball in all 50 states.

Unoccupied Courts

According to Daryl, they’ve had the pleasure of meeting many amiable individuals during their time in the game, an experience Rose echoes.

Playing pickleball has become one of several ways the Sconyers maintain an active lifestyle. They also share a penchant for volleyball, golf, and snowboarding alongside pickleball. In fact, in their early years of marriage, they used to play volleyball five days a week.

After discovering pickleball and playing it for a while, they came up with this novel idea of playing golf and pickleball in all 50 states.

Onset Village marks the ninth stop on the Sconyers’ journey.

“The 48-48-48 Pickleball Challenge”

The Sconyers’ story is similar to Dean “The Pickleball Pilot” Matt and Shannon Yeager’s Guinness World Record attempt to complete 48 pickleball matches across the “Lower 48” in fewer than 48 days, aptly named “The 48-48-48 Pickleball Challenge”.

Dean and Shannon embarked on their challenge in May earlier this year, starting in Mobile, Alabama.

We reported on their progress a couple of weeks later when they were due to match up against Luke Gilliam and Tyler Daugherty from Visit Casper, Wyoming.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
