If you’re looking to give pickleball a go for the first time or simply want to move to the next level, plenty of classes are available to help you do that.

Here, we spotlight four areas of the U.S. that are currently providing classes and workshops for you to work on your game. So, if you live in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, or Utah, read on. There may be a teaching venue near you!

Kingsport, Tennessee

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department in Tennessee is set to introduce Beginner Pickleball classes for newcomers.

According to an announcement from the City of Kingsport, the course will take place on Mondays and Fridays from October 9th to 27th.

The sessions are scheduled from 8:45 to 10 a.m. at Pickleball Court 1 in Riverview Park, situated at 300 Louis Street.

Individuals aged 10 and above are eligible to enroll in the course.

The fee for Kingsport residents is $30, while non-city residents will be charged $35. An instructor will lead the course and will cover fundamental aspects of pickleball. All necessary equipment will be supplied.

If the October course reaches full capacity, the City has indicated it will provide a waiting list for a potential November course.

To register, please follow this link (note that you may need to create an account).

Alternatively, you can access the CivicRec link in the Connect Kingsport app or visit kingsporttn.gov. Once there, click on the “CivicRec” link and use the search bar to find “pickleball.”

Sandy And Orem, Utah

For those residing within traveling distance of Sandy or Orem in Utah, Club Pickleball USA is extending an invitation to complimentary classes. Their introductory sessions are free.

The class schedule is as follows:

– Mondays: 5:30 to 7 p.m. (both locations)
– Wednesdays: 5:30 to 7 p.m. (Orem Club)
– Thursdays: 5:30 to 7 p.m. (Sandy Club)

All necessary equipment will be provided, including balls, paddles, partners, and court facilities. You should wear non-scuff tennis shoes, although most athletic footwear will suffice.

Holyoke, Massachusetts

Holyoke Community College, located at 303 Homestead Avenue, Holyoke, MA 01040, is conducting a series of pickleball clinics this autumn.

These sessions cater to beginners as well as players aiming to elevate their game to tournament-level proficiency.

The group classes will be led by seasoned pickleball coach and racquet sports instructor Kelly Canniff, who brings 25 years of experience teaching individuals of all ages.

Starting October 3, the sessions will take place on certain Tuesday and Thursday mornings on the indoor pickleball courts at the Bartley Center for Athletics and Recreation on the main HCC campus. The cost for each 90-minute session is set at $90.

Pickleball 101 will be held on October 3 and 5, with sessions at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

These sessions target individuals who have played a few times and will cover essential topics like serving, developing a forehand, scoring, basic rules, positioning, and strategy.

Pickleball Intermediate Level is scheduled for October 24 at 8 a.m. and October 26 at 10 a.m.

This level is designed for players who have either taken beginner classes or possess some familiarity and experience with the game.

It aims to advance their play by refining groundstrokes, overhead shots, volleys and serves while also focusing on direction, control, and accuracy.

For those aiming to prepare for tournament-level play, Pickleball Tournament Ready Prep will run on November 28 and 30, with sessions at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m.

These sessions will offer practice to enhance shot variety and accuracy and develop better strategies for doubles play.

Please note that slots are limited, so prompt registration is advised. To register, visit hcc.edu/health-and-fitness.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Moving on to O’Hara Elementary School, situated at 115 Cabin Lane, Pittsburgh, PA 15238.

They are offering five pickleball sessions on Thursdays from 7:30 PM to 8:45 PM, from 10/19/2023 to 11/16/2023.

Local residents are entitled to a $5 discount. The lessons will be conducted in the gym by instructor Matt Lang, and participants must be 18 years of age or older.

Registrants must have a sound understanding of general pickleball rules, scoring, as well as court positioning for server and receiver, along with prior experience playing points.

These classes will incorporate skill-building, drills, and coached play. Participants will learn techniques such as sustained dinking, deep and close volleys, third shot drop technique/accuracy, offensive and defensive lobbing, and more.

Ample time will be allocated for practice during the coached play segment of the class.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.
