A pickleball speed-up should be hard enough to rush the opponent, but controlled enough that you’re ready for the counter. For many rec players, that often means roughly 50–70% effort, adjusted for ball height, balance, target, and opponent position. Use less pace on lower balls and more when the ball sits up.
There’s a funny thing about pickleball speed-ups. The harder rec players try to hit them, the easier they sometimes become to counter. That sounds wrong. But watch what happens.
You see the ball. You decide: Attack.
The grip tightens.
The backswing grows.
The shoulder joins in.
You hit at 90%.
And the opponent—who saw the whole thing coming—blocks it straight back at your feet.
Meanwhile, a better player rolls the same ball at what looks like 60%, catches the defender on the wrong hip, and gets a popup.
So how hard should you actually hit a speed-up?
For most recreational players: Hard enough to rush them. Soft enough that you still own the next ball.
That’s the real target.
Not maximum paddle speed.
Think of Pace as a Dial, Not a Switch
Most rec players have two speeds at the kitchen: dink and kill. Better attackers have everything in between.
- A 45% roll.
- A 60% body attack.
- A 70% speed-up into an exposed hip.
Then, when the counter comes up higher: now maybe they use 90%.
The first speed-up and the finishing ball have different jobs. The first ball often creates trouble. The second one cashes it in.
Anna Leigh Waters has specifically recommended attacking high dinks at roughly 50–60% pace, arguing that players gain considerably more control than they have at 80–100%.
That number isn’t a law. But the reasoning is excellent. At kitchen distance, you don’t need a serve-speed swing to make somebody uncomfortable.
Here’s Why 60% Can Feel Much Faster Than It Sounds
The kitchen extends only seven feet from the net on each side. If both players are close to their NVZ lines, the ball may travel roughly 14 feet between paddles.
Consider the difference purely as an illustration.
A ball traveling 30 mph covers 14 feet in roughly 0.32 seconds. At 40 mph, it’s about 0.24 seconds. So adding 10 mph saves only around eight hundredths of a second in flight time.
That’s meaningful. But here’s the trade; to gain those few hundredths, you may have:
- made your swing easier to read
- reduced your targeting margin
- lost balance
- delayed your recovery for the counter
That’s why deception plus 60% can sometimes rush an opponent more effectively than an obvious 90% blast.
They react later.
And reaction time begins when they recognize the attack—not simply when the ball leaves your paddle.
The Lower the Ball, the Less I Care About Raw Pace
This is probably the most important technical adjustment. Contact height changes how hard you can safely accelerate.
- High ball: More room to attack. You can drive flatter—or slightly downward—and justify more pace.
- Around net height: Margin shrinks. Use more shape and better targeting.
- Below net height: You have to lift the ball. Too much forward speed without enough topspin usually means net or long.
The key isn’t: “Pros attack low balls, so I should hit harder.”
It’s: The lower the contact, the more spin, shape, precision—and usually restraint—you need.
The Incoming Ball Also Sets Your Speed Limit
Here’s another factor almost nobody talks about. A dead dink and a fast dink may reach the same height. They are not the same attacking ball.
A dead ball gives you time to:
- move behind it
- set the paddle
- disguise the shot
- accelerate on your terms
A faster incoming ball gives you less time and already carries energy. That often means you need less swing, not more.
So don’t just read height. Read: Height + incoming speed.
A slow net-high ball?
Green light.
A fast net-high ball jamming your hip?
Completely different problem.
Your Target Determines How Hard You Should Swing
This may be the most useful hidden rule.
Small target?
Take pace off.
Large target?
You can add more.
Suppose you’re trying to hit:
1. A hip
Large-ish tactical target. You can use controlled pace and still create an awkward contact.
2. A narrow line outside the paddle
Smaller window. Now 90% pace makes the shot dramatically less forgiving.
3. A completely open court
Tempting—but sometimes surprisingly low percentage because the angle requires precision.
Coaches strongly favor accuracy before maximum velocity; a low, well-placed speed-up outside the opponent’s comfortable contact zone can be more damaging than a harder ball into their preferred counter.
So pace cannot be separated from target.
Don’t Measure the Speed-Up by Whether It Wins
This is where I think rec players get completely backwards.
You speed one up.
The opponent returns it.
You think: “I didn’t hit it hard enough.”
Maybe. But what did they return?
A weak block?
A ball at shoulder height?
A counter directly into your waiting forehand?
Then your speed-up worked.
Here’s the Pace Ladder I Would Follow
These are effort ranges, not measured ball-speed numbers. Your 60% and my 60% will not produce the same velocity.
Think of them as a training scale.
3.0–3.5: 50–60%
At this level, I want the speed-up to stay in. That’s priority one. Use enough pace to surprise and jam. But keep enough control that you can consistently hit:
✔ body
✔ hip
✔ middle
If 70% makes your swing bigger or your balance worse, you’re not ready for 70%.
Your cue: Place it fast. Don’t blast it.
3.5–4.0: 55–70%
Now you can start changing gears. Use softer acceleration when:
✔ contact is near net height
✔ you’re redirecting
✔ the target is small
✔ the opponent is already prepared
Use more when:
✔ the ball sits higher
✔ you’re completely balanced
✔ the defender is moving or late
Attack higher balls and moving opponents, but avoid forcing the speed-up when you’re backing up or off balance.
Your cue: Rush first. Finish second.
4.0+: Variable Pace Becomes the Weapon
At this level, a fixed percentage becomes less useful. The better question is: How little pace can I use and still create the response I want?
Maybe 50% freezes someone because the shot is disguised.
Maybe 70% at the hip forces an ugly counter.
Maybe the next ball gets 90%.
And now changing speeds becomes offensive.
The opponent cannot simply calibrate to one attack velocity. That variability is harder to defend than somebody who always fires at the same speed.
Your Swing Shouldn’t Look Like Your Percentage
Here’s a subtle one.
If your 60% speed-up looks like a 60% speed-up from the moment you prepare, the opponent gets extra time.
Good attackers make:
- the dink
- the roll
- and the speed-up
look similar for as long as possible. Then acceleration comes late.
So don’t create pace with: bigger preparation.
Create it with: later acceleration.
That’s how 60% plays faster.

The Counter Should Decide Your Maximum Pace
Here’s an easy test. Hit your speed-up. Then ask: Could I comfortably handle the same ball coming straight back at me?
Because sometimes that’s exactly what happens.
If your answer is:
“No chance—I was still finishing my swing,”
you probably attacked too violently.
A good kitchen attack should allow: accelerate → stop → reload.
Not: accelerate → rotate → watch → panic.
This is one reason compact speed-ups are so effective. The shot and the recovery are really one movement.
There’s a Difference Between Speed-Up Pace and Hands-Battle Pace
This is another distinction intermediate players often miss.
The first speed-up may be controlled.
Then the ball comes back higher.
Now your available pace changes.
Think of the exchange like gears.
Ball 1: controlled speed-up.
Ball 2: aggressive counter.
Ball 3: finish if the ball rises.
You don’t have to enter fifth gear on the first shot. In fact, doing so can make the second shot harder because you’re still recovering.
The first ball opens the door. The next one is where you may step through it.
A Moving Opponent Requires Less Pace
This one is almost unfair once you recognize it. If your opponent is:
- leaning
- sliding
- recovering
- changing direction
you often don’t need as much speed.
Why? Because you’re combining your ball speed with their movement problem.
A 60% attack behind a moving opponent may be much harder to defend than an 85% attack into somebody perfectly planted
Try the “Minimum Effective Pace” Drill
Most speed-up drills teach people to hit harder. Try the opposite.
Start a crosscourt dink rally. Whenever you receive a genuinely attackable ball, speed it up—but your goal is to use the least pace necessary to create one of three outcomes:
- a jammed contact
- a weak counter
- or a popup
Start around 50%.
If the defender handles it comfortably, add a little.
If your accuracy disappears, subtract.
If they’re already late at 60%, don’t go to 80% just because you can.
After 20 attacks, you should begin finding your own minimum effective pace.
That’s more useful than somebody telling you:
“Always hit your speed-up at 70%.”
The Number Isn’t the Point
Leigh Waters’ 50–60% advice is a very good starting point. But don’t turn it into another rigid pickleball rule.
A high dead ball against a moving opponent may justify more.
A low ball toward a tiny target may require less.
A disguised speed-up can succeed with less pace.
An obvious attack may need more—but that might be telling you the real problem is the disguise.
So here’s the rule I’d actually give an intermediate player: Use the least pace that makes the opponent uncomfortable.
Then get ready.
If the ball comes back weak, increase the pressure.
If it comes back high, finish.
And if you’re constantly trying to make the first speed-up your hardest ball of the rally?
You’re probably using the speed-up for the wrong job.
